There is a simple fix for that zero issue. I fixed mine a few years ago with a button sequence, though I've since forgotten.
Anybody recall the fix?

FOUND IT! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQyncNYq0Rw

You just close the caliper and press the "ORIGIN" button with a ballpoint pen or similar. Done

I lost the display on my 6" Mit. I called Mitutoyo and the rep told me how to fix it. I tried everything, but my display is dead. That being the case said the rep; you need a new read head(replace caliper). The caliper has never been mistreated; always kept clean and in its case. The caliper was about 7 years old. I'm hesitant about replacing the Mit with the same or to go with Starrett, B&S or Fowler. What would be your recommendation?

The Mitutoyo are pretty much the gold standard in industry.

That said, everyone should be aware that there are some very good Chinese counterfeits of this tool. Google it for ways to identify them.

Man I love my Mit's , really good Digital verniers , even the old dial ones, the 505 ---what workhorses !

But what i want to show is a trick used on a caliper with short battery life and maybe will inspire others to look at their calipers

I have a Starrett 722, one of the most accurate Digital Calipers ever made, and it reads in tenths - Right !
I bought it 35 years ago and it cost over $200 --
It still is strong but Starrett quit making them maybe 25 years ago because they are battery hogs
The unit never shuts off and a battery lasts maybe 2 months, but i modified mine and it is still functional.
Pictures are better than words so you can see the solution .
I found out exactly where battery spring points were, and slit ( .010") the case and slide in a plastic shim which disconnects the power
