01 oil hardened steel machinability

How well does the material machine as it comes from factory? Here is the link to McMaster car:

Quite nice...just keep it cool

An alternative that I also use is ground to size hot rolled.

It used to be quite a bit less expensive.

Thats good to know, thanks. My Mikado came with tool steel reverse links, and I am trying to pair them up with similar steel to make the die blocks. I also seen recently a guy who used Bronze for the die blocks.

Suggest bronze for that application unless the links are hardened.

When you make them....make extras

They take a beating

They came with the project so there is some uncertainty of actual material. The file test shows them harder than mild steel however by how much I cannot say. They are defiantly not hard like HSS or equivalent as the file does remove material however slowly.

I recommend making the die blocks from tool steel, hardened post-machining.
Their relatively small contact area in the reverse links will wear non-ferrous metals rather quickly, as Bill implied.

The prolonged discussion in regards to tool steel.
Are any of you folks familiar with (O6)Graph-Mo? It's one of the nicest to machine tool steels to be developed and offers excellent wear qualities. Available as precision ground flat bar in an endless selection of widths and thicknesses, in either 18" or 36" lengths. Based on my experiences of many years ago, anyway. The free machining quality is highly unlikely to have changed, but the sizes may have.

On that subject, proper heat treating is often a stumbling block, and can result in altered dimensions. Some materials are more stable than others, and often can be the solution to negative experiences. Graph-Air (A10) is an excellent substitute when distortion is an issue. It, too, has excellent machining and wear qualities.

Just sayin'

Harold:
Thank you for that educational input. I was familiar with Graph-Air, but not Graph-Mo.
More to learn.

I work with O1 all the time and fine it a pleasure to machine.
