Plastics File

Post by wally318 »

Nicholson has a file listed in their catalog as a Plastics file mode# 06612.
Described as being designed for nylon/ UHMW etc(softer materials)
I can't find it listed for sale anywhere.
Do any other mfg's make anything similar?

Try MicroMark as they specialize in model making tools and supplies. On a side note, I would think any standard file would work however It should be dedicated for plastic only.

A Google search turned up this place . Looks like they might sell you one. The file you're looking for appears about 2/3 down the page in my browser.

I use a vixen file in soft stuff

While not specifically designed for plastics...I have them and they seem to work ok for my needs.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I checked out Roberts, but they're wholesale and not worth it for the hassle of setting up an account for a
1 time small purchase.
Bill, thanks for your suggestion. After a bit of searching/research I settled on
the idea of Japanese milled tooth files at Lee valley.
I went down with a few pcs of plastic to test. Although the teeth and very positve rake
and extremely sharp compared to the run of the mill files we usually deal with.
They proved a bit too agressive. The salesman also brought a Bahco Handy file.
It has a coarser cut on the 1 side and finer on the other. It seemed just right.
When I got home I chucked 1 of the pcs in the lathe. The file made a nice chamfer
and also quickly formed a large radius, with a nice smooth finish.
I will dedicate that file for plastics only. Thanks.

Take a look at Crescent Nicholson #06992N 10" Double/Single cut Bastard file Safe Face back. It is a triangular knife edge file. They make a 4" #06711N, 6" #06804N, 8" #06898N, and 12" #07085N. I have seen these used on plastic laminate edges. A file card cleans the plastic bits out of the teeth, lickety split. See if this one will work for you.
