Pool pump duty motor
Pool pump duty motor
Someone locally is selling a "pool pump duty" motor.
Would this be suitable for running a machine like a mill or lathe?

Re: Pool pump duty motor
Probably not, mainly for mechanical reasons.

Re: Pool pump duty motor
What would be "mechanical" reasons?
The motor is a standard mount (looks like a 56 face mount)

Re: Pool pump duty motor
Pool pump would imply continuous duty and a constant load near max. Worth a try, depending on the price.
I am using a similar motor for a home-made grinding station; admittedly intermittent duty and light loads.

Re: Pool pump duty motor
you would also need to be careful of the output RPM of the motor....
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

That's one of the reasons I'm interested.

There you go...just what the doctor ordered.
May be a problem with the milk since it appears to be a horizontal mount motor, which is ok if you have a horiz lathe or mill, but may be a problem with a vertical lathe or mill

Re: Pool pump duty motor
I do not see any problem, other than the turning direction, can't be reversed. The flange looks like it can come out.

Re: Pool pump duty motor
I was given what they called a 5hp version of one, it was rated like a compressor motor. It had a tapered output shaft, check this one. I built it up and turned it down to fit a pressure washer pump. It wouldn't start the pump against the unloader valve. Used it for a couple of years till the magic smoke leaked out. Replaced it with a cheap Chinese 3 hp one. It now starts against the unloader valve.
Note at low speed the one listed is only 0.1 Hp meant to circulate the hot tub.

Ah, that's going to be a problem.
Was looking at it for a lathe and/or small horizontal mill, but 0.1hp isn''t going to do it.
Thanks for spotting that and thanks everyone for your comments.

Re: Pool pump duty motor
A lot of those pump motors have oddball shafts that are designed to directly mate with an impeller. You may not be able to mount a sheave on the motor with doing some rework.

Note that the label on the motor specifies:
"Mount horizontal with vents down."
'Could be a limiting factor too.
