ENCO 8 x 42 Knee mill Quill feed issue

Post by Odyknuck »

Hi Folks,
I have an issue with my Enco 8 x 42 mill and thought you could help. I cannot pull the pin out to reverse the quill feed. It worked the last time I used it however that was many years ago. I am assuming it's froze up however don't know for sure as I cannot get it out of the Mill. I noticed it when I went to mill my Mikado Steam Loco saddle to an 8" radius.
Thanks
Steve

I had similar problem on another make of mill -> grease had solidified from having sat for 20+ years.

dribbled in some solvent (from a spray can and schnozzle) and GENTLY pulled on / pushed the pin by hand -> until it eventually moved and I was able to work it back and forth

then took it apart and cleaned out all the old grease and re lubed it.

patience....

I have removed the detent ball and sprayed it up with PB blaster to no avail. I have been using the mill quill feed over the years however have not needed to reverse it until mounting the boring bar horizontal that puts the cutting point upside down, needing to run the mill backwards.

Same problem...just took time...

Maybe warn the quill with a heat gun?

Tried heating the reverse shaft to no avail. Did not try to heat the quill head stock.

Just overall warming...going to take a lot of heat...maybe a heat lamp overnight...

So, I went back out to the shop and heated up the head casting around the quill controls for about 10 minutes and was able to free up the shaft. I had the quill feed speed control and clutch out, so it allowed me to direct the heat into the machine's head better. I oiled everything up really well before putting it back together, so I should be good to go.
Thanks much for the tip's Bill

I would get it hot and running to really warm all the lube up ..and give it a good oil change...including shifting fwd/rev.

Most every machine has some sort of drain plug...

Do not know this machine in particular, but never hurts to look.

Failing that...give it a change of direction every month or so.

Glad to be of service...

I do not believe this machine has an oil sump and is a total loss system. There are two small cups that I put oil in every other time I use it. The Gibbs and ways have an oiler pump that holds about a pint. I will defiantly toggle the reverse every few times of use.
Thanks

Hmmm.

Thought from the peanut gallery:

My mill has oil cups also...but they feed only the quill bearings and the id of the quill...and as you say are totally loss

The quill drive system is grease packed and separate from the quill itself...and very annoying to clean the grease from.

You are on the right track
