Little engines 0-4-0 project

Post by ChooChooChris »

I will be posting my progress here for my 0-4-0 project and additional pictures at
http://choochoochris.com/category/7-5-i ... 4-0-build/ since multiple photos per post are a pain on message boards.

I was recently lucky enough to buy a 0-4-0 project that has "very little" remaining work as it already runs on air!

Remaining task will be the boiler, plumbing, and detail work as well as some work on the tender and hand pump.

Got some work on the firebox side of the boiler done! Rolled in some tubes to 10 percent wall thickness reduction! More photos available here http://choochoochris.com/2022/10/01/boi ... ng-copper/

I can't help but wonder what is going to happen when the boiler is welded. Distortion way well cause some leaking of tubes.

While I've never built a boiler, I would expect that the tube sheets would be welded before the holes were sized for the tubes, to ensure a round hole. Comments?

Is the way I have always done it -> tubes are always last in...and often a cleanup on the holes with a reamer after welding the sheet in.

to say nothing of just getting it all together with the tubes there...I am a klutz.

But then I am an old school, full size boiler and hex guy where tubes are almost always the last thing in on a welded assembly.

Can’t access the tubes to roll them from the firebox once the front is welded on to the firebox.

Note the smoke box side is not rolled in and was just for holding things in place.
What order would you do things in?

I put everything together then add tubes.

Knowing that front not rolled is enlightening😀

Since I design my own boilers, I ensure that I can get a roller into the firebox...or I use a long roller and reach in from the front to do the firebox....which is an $$ solution, but sometimes the only one..

You need to be careful that you do not get or have a firebox leak and have no way to re-roll -> not easy to test without a finished shell.

But then ..all of life is a compromise and you are moving ahead smartly..

Keep the pix coming

I would think that you must be able to roll a tube even when everything is welded. How else would you replace a tube some time later??
