Post by FLtenwheeler »

I am looking for drawings to make a steam brake valve. I know I have one but cannot find it.

Thanks

You'll find it as soon as you get a replacement.

I've got 33 pages of various brake valves. Later today I'll scan them in and put them up where you can get them. Most are too large to post here. In the meantime, below is one from the old Nelson site:

Tim,

Live Steam magazine, Feb 1983 has an article by Dick Bagley on making an under the cab brake valve and brake stand.

Finally got the whack-a-mole issues under control — I think. The files are too big to upload here so here's a link to a pdf of several valves.

From a practical standpoint how well do steam brakes work?

If you ou fill your cylinder with hot steam then it condenses after a while wont you be left with a waterlogged cylinder?

The steam brakes on my Allen Ten Wheeler can always lock the drive wheels if I am not paying attention.
Yes, there are things I do to decrease the braking forces.

When the steam condenses to water, then I have steam over hydraulic brakes, and they still work just fine.
I also installed small vent valves on top of the cylinders connected to the steam inlet pipe. I can slightly open those valves
which lets the cylinders vent and partially drain. That also speeds up the release of the brakes.
Even during use, a small exhaust there helps. But I think those vents are not really needed, based on years of hydraulic function.

Note: The brake cylinders and pistons are bronze, with stainless steel piston rods. They don't mind the water.
