Gear cutting
Successfully cut a gear on my milling machine. Very complex task, even with a form cutter.

Nice.
It's a tedious, nerve wracking job from what I have seen on youtube videos.
I have to make some for my dividing head (ironically using my dividing head).

Re: Gear cuting
It is tedious, and even folks that we all admire can screw it up once in awhile. I recently watched a video of Stefan Gottswinter screwing up a gear because he didn't lock the quill. I have some worm gears to cut in the near future. I'll cut them in aluminum first, before scrapping a bunch of expensive bronze.

Good luck, that is no guarantee.I'll cut them in aluminum first, before scrapping a bunch of expensive bronze.
I once cut 4 camshaft
1st try mirror image of a good part
2nd try a double width lobe was cot short
3rd try I got everything down path, I was really jamming and overshoot the flank, made it almost round
This is ridiculous, better sleep over and try the next day
4th try I got a camshaft I could use

So, you're saying I should cut it in aluminum first, second, and third?tornitore45 wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 2:37 pmGood luck, that is no guarantee.I'll cut them in aluminum first, before scrapping a bunch of expensive bronze.

Cutting a 150 tooth mod1, you have to stay focused mind starts to drift off and that is where you forget the turns, forget to advance the sector arm or lock the spindle.
Total concentration and no interupptions

Re: Gear cuting
Would this be the good place to fit in a stepper motor to make the required amount of turns. They can be quite accurate and repeat very nicely without getting distracted. The gcode for something like that should be quite simple.

Re: Gear cuting
I did cut the 60 teeth gear perfectly and the 1.5 turns on the RT handle was chiseled in my mind.
When it came the time to cut the 30 teeth started out advancing 1.5 turns, after 4 or 5 teeth they look kind of small and crowded.

Added benefit of not needing to be an integer number of holes, too!
