Wood Shaper Cabinet = Welding Table?

Post by SteveHGraham »

Someone near me is selling a Powermatic shaper cabinet with no motor or spindle. Cost: $100.

This is a big machine like a table saw. Has a 30" by 40" cast iron top with slots.

Naturally, I am thinking of turning it into a welding table. It's flat, it has at least one T-slot, it may have casters, and cast iron doesn't stick to weld spatter.

Thoughts?

I think it would be nearly impossible to fit my tractor and plow up on that cabinet to do repairs. My cultivator might be hard to get through the door to get there and when the grain drill breaks at the far end of the field I don't think moving that cabinet to it will help. Otherwise I like the idea of welding up where I don't have to be on my knees or laying on my back.
