USRA SS Boxcar in 1/8 Scale

Post by FLtenwheeler »

Is there anyone interested in USRA Single Sheathed boxcars in 1/8 scale?

There were used by a lot of railroads with 25,000 being built.

Thanks

Tim

What kind of car ends do you anticipate using? Dreadnaight, Murphy, or re-inforced wood?

What are you thinking for the roof? Wood with membrane or raised seam steel panels?

Tim, if you need manufacturer drawings, contact me off group at mark_landgraf at yahoo dot com

About 15 years ago, I made up a punch and die set to do viable rib count Murphy ends. The trials were successful, but having aluminum die pieces and steel punch pieces, it was more of a proof of concept tooling rather than production tooling. If you want I can take a few photos.

Tim, very interesting project! I've off and on been working on drawing a 5/5/5 corrugated end in Fusion360 but haven't gotten very far.

I will most likely do it in 3 pieces out of steel. Lucky my son has a CNC mill to make the forming blocks.

I thought similarly, it's unfortunate all of the three pieces are unique but it's going to be easier to press the corrugations that way. Are you thinking one die with all 5 corrugations or a die with a single corrugation and some kind of registration to get them spaced correctly? I haven't looked at the double-sheathed car drawings to see, but could you do them with the same die on slightly wider stock?

Hi John

I think the corrugations might be the I will see if I can find a drawing and check.

I have already spent a good amount of money with a couple of museums on this first project.

The corrugations are the same for both the Single Sheathed and the Double Sheathed. The ends are different sizes to fit each boxcar.
