I actually have 9" a South bend lathe that has a V belt pulley on the motor and a flat belt pulley on the first intermediate shaft

It runs a V belt...but is VERY DODGEY and not much good for power transmission.

Since the next belt in the train is flat ..it really matters not

Had the lathe been mine, I would have changed the second pulley to a v belt.

As the others implied, you’ve got a putting-a-square-peg into-a-round-hole situation.  If you can, replace the flat sheave with a suitable V-sheave and use a V-belt.  Both items are readily available.  The much less-desirable alternative would be to replace the existing V-sheave with a flat one.

Depends on sheave sizes and load. I have a 1908 power hacksaw that was originally flat belt drive from a line shaft. Pulley is about 16"+ dia and 4" wide. It has been driven by a V belt for the last 50+ years. V pulley is 4"? Works great.

It is possible to have mixed sets, not optimum, but possible.

A V-Flat drive. Never knew such a thing existed.

isn't that chart just helping with calculation of belt length?

Well a lot of South Bend lathes had a V groove pully on the motor and a flat sheeve on the countershaft. Seemed to work well enough on the 2 SB lathes that I had !
