F UNIT STEAM BOILER HEAT VENT DETAIL

Post by jmurray »

Does anyone have good detail pics of the stream heat roof vent detail on the rear roof section?

Very hard to find online.. most models don't have this detail
Any pics woud be helpful. The air intake vent will be my emergency motor cut out switch.

BTW, some installations had the steam generator (not boiler—two different animals) drawing combustion air from inside the engine room, rather than through the hatch, as seen in the above illustrations. Such an arrangement was more often seen with units that had been retrofitted with a steam generator than in OEM installations.

Drawing air from the engine room was discouraged by Vapor (manufacturer of most of the steam generators installed in locomotives) due to the slight risk of a flash-back through the generator’s air intake due to improperly-adjusted ignition electrodes or poor-quality fuel oil. I have personal experience with the flash-back thing—ended up with a face full of soot and a very black shirt.
