UP FEF 4-8-4 in Ogden Pictures
All,
I'm planning a trip to the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden to (among other things) see UP 833 - one of the few surviving FEF's. I plan to spend a day in early July taking pictures and trying to relate the drawings in Fitts' book to the real thing. Any requests? I ask because I thought someone here wanted information on the mounting of the injectors (but I can't find that post). I'm not a professional photographer, but I'll do the best I can.

I used to visit that engine on a regular basis when I lived in Utah. It was then located in Pioneer Park (Salt Lake City), between 3rd and 4th south and 3rd and 4th West, very near the old D&RG Western Depot. Sadly, for years it sat without an enclosure so all of the glass was broken from the engine. The move to Ogden was likely a good thing.
I had planned to build a model of 833, but time is running out for me. I've made a small effort by starting on a pattern for one of the drivers. Assuming I get far enough along with the project, I fully intend to pour wheels that are correct in detail, which, to my knowledge, hasn't been done before. The typical wheel on models of today are cast solid, while the prototype are cast hollow with detail inside the wheels. A real challenge to cast.

Hi hope your well. I'm looking for pictures of the Handcock vertical double check valve on top of the boiler. I dont have good drawings but not sure if you are allowed to climb up lol

My understanding is that there are two injectors:Could sure use some good pictures of the cold feed water pump.
Engineers side - Nathan non-lifting injector.
Firemans side - Sellers exhaust steam injector
Pictures of each in: Kratville "The mighty 800" page 38 and 39. Is this what you're looking for?
There's also mention of using a Worthington SA type feedwater system that uses a centrifugal pump. Not sure what's on 833.

Great trip to the museum here in Salt Lake City. More details later. In the meantime, this device is mounted on the left side of the boiler and I don’t know what it is.
No manufacturers markings that I could find.

That device is the hot water pump. Feedwater from the tender gets pumped into the smokebox and heated past the boiling point. (Can't recall the name of the type of heater on 844). It then gets rammed (pumped) into the boiler via the hot water pump. The pump has to overcome the boiler pressure and the water temp in the line is somewhere around 300 degrees F. A violent yet graceful operation.

OK - Here are some results. I was not able to climb on the engine, but I bought a long extension pole for my camera and was able to take videos of the top of the engine that way. Then screen shots of the vids.
The feedwater system is the Worthington SA type as described on page 85 in "The mighty 800" by Kratville. There is a nice diagram on page 17 of "Steam Locomotives" by Westcott.

Could sure use some good pictures of the cold feed water pump.
Under the right side of the cab there is a Nathan non-lifting injector that takes water from the tender and sends it up to the RHS of the Hancock dual check inlet. Inlet steam comes from a valve just in front of the cab atop the boiler. The pipe in front comes from the Wilson steam separator atop the boiler. Under the left side of the cab is a steam powered centrifugal pump. Left side of this pump showing who makes the drive The centrifugal pump sends water forward and up into the Worthington feedwater heater atop the smokebox. The path of the hot water is difficult to discern, but it looks like a large pipe that goes to the hot water pump shown in my previous post. From that piston pump the pressurized hot water goes forward and up to the right side of the Hancock dual check inlet. There are pictures of the cross section of that inlet on the web, but copyrighted so I can't display here. But they seem to be from the series "The Science of Railways" by Kirkman. I've been unable to find an original (out of copyright) so far.Handcock vertical double check valve on top of the boiler

I wasn't able to see anything significant there. Also the cab was locked so I was unable to get pictures inside. It is interesting though that the cab floor is connected directly to the back of the boiler and rests on a 4"x2" (approx) rectangular steel tube frame welded to the firebox.Also where the front of the cab meets the boiler, any angle iron etc please.
