1.6" scale Climax Truck parts *** SOLD ***
I'm selling my Precision Locomotive Castings Climax truck casting parts. These are BEAUTIFUL lost wax steel(and stainless) castings! There is enough for two trucks.
Doug Edwards' site:
http://www.precisionlocomotivecastings.com/
has instructions for machining these parts.
Included, if buyer desires, are cut steel rings I had made for tires(I forget what alloy I had them made from) Those are made from nominal .750" thick plate, they measure about .765"
Included are:
8 wheels
8 journal boxes
8 journal box pedestals
8 bolster pedestals
4 skew bevel gear sets(8 parts)
2 skew bevel gears for driveline
8 cut steel tires(if buyers wants them)
I will never get to building this, so it's time for another builder to take over!
Pick them up in central NJ or I can box and ship out to you.
$750.00 for the lot, without tires, $800.00 with tires
Thanks!

Building a climax is on my list unfortunately I don't have the extra cash right now.
Re: 1.6" scale Climax Truck parts
Having restored and extensively operated Climax Hillcrest #10, I admit to admiring those remarkable castings!
And also admit to have zero interest in operating a Climax again!! 1400 miles linear in one summer, and 2000 miles vertical!
We named #10 "Humpy."

I've heard from multiple people the full size climaxes were seemingly barely held together and clearly built to a budget in every way.
has anyone finished one of Precision loco works 2.5 scale or 1.6 scale climax? I don't think ive seen a pic of the finished product.

In the process of developing the castings, Doug paid several visits to Keith Christensen to look at and measure parts of the class A Climax that Keith had retrieved from the Nome area over 40 years ago. The locomotive is now in Corey, PA, where it is being restored for operation. https://corryrails.com/

RThomp,
Good question! I know Doug has built the trucks, there is a how to on building the trucks on his site. And yes Climax didn't throw a lot of money around!

Re: 1.6" scale Climax Truck parts
We learned during restorations of several geared locomotives that the Climax was the "Poor Mans' geared locomotive!"
Heislers are far superior, faster and quieter, and easier to maintain. Shays had more even, slower power. Willametes were the height of development of that species.
When our #10 Climax was running light through the woods the primary sound was the clanging/ringing of the 7 sets of gears meshing in and out.
But I CAN imaging running a live steam model of one... slowly.

wow, ya those are really nice!
you should do a build log on the entire engine. that'd so interesting to follow!

Curious...is there no interest in these because no one want to build a Climax or the price is too high? (or both, hahaha)
Re: 1.6" scale Climax Truck parts
Honestly I would love to jump on this but it is just not in the budget for me right now and I’m not sure that I’m ready to take on another project.
You might want to try listing them on the Live Steam Swap and Shop Facebook groups. You might get some more traction there. This is a great forum but I have found responses to be much quicker on the Facebook groups.
I also think logging locomotives have a bit of a narrow following. They are really interesting but they do have a reputation for being on the slow side.
