Karstens od grinder help needed..
Karstens od grinder help needed..
Picked up an old karstens id/od grinder and I'm looking to find some information on it. A owners manual would be great!! Just doubt I'll find one... just trying to get a handle on how the controls are supposed to work. The Y axis has a .00005" adjustment knob in it, that only seems to move the Y .00025 before it stops. I though it should just keep going??
Anyway, it's an older machine that needs some work, cleaning, and derusting and I'm having trouble uploading the pictures I've taken " file too large" but here's one picture for now.
I'll resize others later...

Ok, let's see if this works now... I resized the image of the headstock.. there might be an issue with this aluminum ?? Well best I can call it is a face plate. I think it drives a lathe dog, but it just spins freely and feels loose like a bad bearing or something.
The rusted steel part rotates with it too...

Disassembling and derusting in progress... don't think the grinding head was ever pulled, what a mess.. but it's cleaning up good... using eastwood afterblast and a scotch brite pad to remove the rust, followed by oil and a scotch bright pad, then wipe down and more oil !! Lol

This is the .00005" inch adjustment knob that I'm having an issue with. It only moves the Y about .00025" then stops turning.
I would think it should keep turning?? Not sure. Never fooled with one of these machines before and I'm just starting to figure it out.. like the knurled knob in the center of the y handwheel engages the fine adjustment..
Not 100% sure how the lever to the right of the y handwjeel functions either. All thevway up it goes into a ratcheting mode that clicks about every .001" of + y travel, then down disengage it.

As far as the issue with the “faceplate”, the work head is most likely set up for dead center grinding. The knob on the back of the work head engages and disengages the center allowing it to rotate with the spindle or not. Known as “live center” or “dead center” grinding.
I’m not familiar with that grinder, but the lever on the front is most likely to select spindle speeds.

The .001 feed lever is just a quick way to I infeed for roughing. When you get close to your finish dimension you use the hand wheel and fine feed adjustment.
What you are referring to as the Y axis is actually the Z axis. It only has X and Z. I only mention this as it may be confusing when trying to get help.

The big handwheel is graduated in .001" then the lil knob in that handwheel is graduated in .00005" increments. But only travels about .00025" and stops... I don't think this is all the travel it's supposed to have... or is it ???

That pin does drop in, but doesn't seem to do anything as that faceplate is concerned. Well, atleast I got it cheap.. Just going to take a bit to sort it out...

Re: Karstens od grinder help needed..
I know nothing about grinders but whenever I see measurements around a lathe-like thing and they are 1/2 of what I'd expect I end up believing that they are diameter measurements rather than radius measurements.
Re: Karstens od grinder help needed..
Well, the good news is I got that .00005" increment adjustment working.. Bad news is I'm finding alot of other things wrong.
There is a spur gear with a missing tooth under the table that has something to do with the hydraulic feed system. I haven't cut a spur gear in years, but I'll manage. I'll pull the table in a few days and get into that later.. The other thing is that there is definetly something going on in the headstock. I don't think it's ever been apart, so that's kinda a plus, but who knows what I'll find once I open that can of worms. The speeds seem to work but there does not seem to be a solid connection to the spindle. I'm a bit nervous as to what I'll find to say the least, atleast the grinding head feels super silky smooth
Derusting continues.. looking pretty good imho...
