The first glue up for the rear buffer.
I set up the dado and stood on the side and used it like a shaper. Hopefully Carl B won't cringe at my woodworking. Jim

While the glue is drying on the 3rd glue up of the buffer beam the lifting links looked like the next thing to tackle 5/16-18 thread on one end and 3/8 ream on the other. Cut off blocks are great as sacrificial supports. Jim

Jim...not cringing at all! Did you still have all 10 digits where you were done? Then you did good!

Years ago, built a gondola with my partners at that time. Was our 2nd car building attempt. We purchased (2) cast aluminum gondola ends from Railroad Supply. There was a mounting flange on the casting...most likely for a metal sided gondola. BUT...we were using 1-by shelving board for the sides to keep costs down. Couldn't cut the dado slot in the ends of the side boards...the basement ceiling joists got in the way. SO...had my partners hold the table saw over at a 45 deg angle while I cut the slots! And yes...everybody still had all their figners when done! After that, cut a recess on the upper inside of the board and capped the board edge with an aluminum channel. That car is now going on 36 years old...and will be up for sale soon (need to "thin" the rolling stock herd). Carl B.
Life is like a sewer...what you get out of it depends on what you put into it!
I don't walk on water...I just learned where some of the stepping stones are!
I love mankind...it's some of the people I can't stand!

Yesterday was staining day and today was polyurethane day and while drying and flipping I jumped on the upper rocker arms. Broaching will be the next step. Jim

This was enjoyable part of the tender build.
The last shot on the left side shows close to where the cab wall will be. Jim

This is how I drilled the counter sink to depth and in the same 2 spots on all ends. Jim

Back on the broaching of the upper rocker arms then moved on to the lower rocker arms which are shorter center to center and key 180 degrees. On the big ends I had to use the boring head the closest under 3/4" I had was 11/16 to much for the reamer alone. Last shot is the reverse arm I sawed out of 1/2" hot rolled. They will be next. Jim

I got a few hours here and there in the shop this week and came close to finishing the rocker boxes. The top and bottom were cleaned up and center and square were settled on .the slot was milled and pilot holes drilled. A 3/4" block was used as a square surface in the chuck to face one end. Over to my surface plate (table saw) and bring the center line down the faced surface. Now the block is 1 inch high and with the rocker box placed on top of the block my height scribe was set to 1" pluse 0.57 and center was found at the proper distance down from the frame. Back in the lathe and drilled, bored and reamed. Jim
