2-8-0 Consolidation Build

Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
The West Valley Consolidations are great little engines, I have a friend who has one. You will find that the 2" cylinder bore is a little too big for the small boiler, suggest sleeve it down to 1.75".

Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
For those who have seen this design for cylinder cocks - will the volume of the piping act like extra clearance between the piston and cylinder heads and effect performance, or will it stay full of water, which doesn't compress?
Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
So I’m back on my Consolidation project, I want to make some cylinder liners to reduce the 2” bore down to 1 3/4” bore. This has been advised by doing research on these engines, as they tend to be steam hogs with that big bore. What material should I use to do this? Should this be a press fit? Thanks

Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
use the same as the original cylinder material.
make it a very light fit, and glue it in with high temp loctite (follow their directions for clearances)

Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Making some progress on the Baby Consolidation; frame is painted and repainted the wheels, got the axle assemblies put back under the frame, working on the lead truck now. I am still sorting parts but the Most of it is making sense to me. I am going to make sleeves for the cylinders to reduce the bore, that will be the next project tackled.

Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
Glad to see ya getting started again on your project. I find I too have been a bit on and off with my project due to a multitude of circumstances however somehow I get back to it lol.
Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
So I am slowly progressing on the 2-8-0, working on the valve gear, main rods, and side rods. The main rods have bearings in them but the side rods do not. Is this normal for the side rods not to have bearings? Also there appears to be a lubrication fitting in the end of the axles, is there a special oil can or fitting that is used to lubricate them? Hopefully I will get on making the sleeves for the cylinders.

Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
I would put bearings in the side rods.
Method of getting lube into the axle depends on the fitting.generaly the screw is there to keep out dirt.
I just use a pump oil can with a small tip on mine.

I couldn't agree more. Steel on steel is a lousy bearing, especially when both elements are soft.

Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
Some locomotives have been built with cast bronze side rods and bushings wouldn't be needed until the first shopping. With steel, fit bushings. Do a search for rod bushings, I believe some have had success with some of the slippery plastics. Bronze is a good choice, but people have had poor success with sintered bronze.
Re: 2-8-0 Consolidation Build
Delrin makes a good impact-resistant rod bearing material.
Graphite impregnated Acetal Delrin rods are even available on Amazon.
They likely will last the lifetime of the locomotive.

So does that obviate the need for oiling?
