Here is an interesting video on the old Kartrak system:

Does anyone add Kartrak barcodes to their 1960s/1970s era equipment?

The 1974 Centennial Edition of the Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia devotes 13 pages to the subject matter showing
exactly where the templates are to be mounted on various types/pieces of rolling equipment.

For the detailing purist… the template appears to have had two different physical sizes.
The standard one measured 20-1/2” long by 8” wide.
The extended range template measured a tad longer at 24 inches.

The attached drawing snap shot also shows the templates had 6 magnets attached to them.

Indeed an interesting little modeling detail that has been on my list. I’m adding a couple to my wrecker.
How I make them… I’ve not decided.

There’s likely a very good “squared up” photo of a template on the Internet somewhere for further reference… but have not spent time looking yet.
