Loctite 565 is a low strength pipe dope that is good to 300°F.

Used that to assembly all the model piping on my wife's 1" Pacific (3/16" MTP to 1/4" NPT fittings). Even when the pipes were not totally tightened, they didn't leak a drop during hydro testing or when running. This combined with that slick holder you have, should solve the problem without damaging the threads further and will be easier to use than the teflon tape.

They also make a 577 & 592 which is listed as medium strength. I have not tried those versions.

One of my first introductions to Loctite in the live steam hobbyvwas a British fellow who built a copper boiler with screw in stays.

They were all screwed in and sealed with Loctite, no solder...no leaks.

He admitted he had a couple on assembly/ first hydro.

He marked them, pulled a small vacuum on the boiler and dabbed a bit more loctite in

Voila

Somewhere I have a picture of the finished loco...a 5" gauge Springbok
