K Brake Drawings

Post by davidqueener »

Gentlemen,

I have been working on 3D CAD drawings for several truss rod era freight cars, and I have prototype blueprints for almost every part on these Southern Railway cars, every part that is, save for the Westinghouse K brakes, specifically KC 8x12 brake cylinder and reservoir with type K triple valve. I have some diagrams, such as they are, but not the well-dimensioned blueprints one needs for an accurate scale model, let alone a working model.

I'll attach a few images of what I've found so far.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Dave Queener

I don't think it's what you are looking for but check posts over the last week or so on Facebook "Steam Locomotive Builders and Users, documents and procedures" for some information.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the heads-up. I did look at those posts. The pics of a derelict K-brake were helpful and the K brake manuals are also useful. Still no blueprints, but good information nonetheless.

The 1916 Car Builders Dictionary has a dimensioned drawing on page 655. I think it is a K type, but it doesn't say. It does have nearly all the dims on it though.

Thanks for the info, but after looking up the 1916 Car Builders Dictionary online, this is the same sort of drawing as the one I posted above.

Jeff,

I cannot thank you enough for posting your drawings!!! I was figuring my next step would be to find a prototype car with a K brake on it, and crawl up beneath it to get as many measurements as I could. The problem of course is that there are very few cars, at least in the Knoxville, Tennessee area or at nearby museums, that would still have a K brake as part of their brake rigging. I saw one on a dilapidated wooden flat car up at Cass, WV a few years ago, but that is a long ways from here.

Thanks again!
