Drawer cabinet refurb

Post by Texer »

Hi, I just got this cabinet to clean up and use. I think it would be nice to add a slip surface to the shelves under the drawers. My first thought is basic plastic shelf covering. Before going that route I wonder if another surface would be quiet and more long lasting? Tia.

Problem with that is that everytime you open and close the drawers -> everything moves.

I prefer something with some grip
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I would use polyethylene self adhesive strips 1" wide applied from front to back on the bottom of each drawer and if you want, repeat the strips on the top of each shelf in line with the drawer strips. You want to avoid the metal to metal contact for smooth operation. That is what I would try.

Ah.. well, that is a horse of a different color 🐎

Butcher's wax works well for that application

Quickest and easiest IMHO is to go to home depot or mehnards
and buy a sheet of Formica and cut to the floor of the cabinet .
Its less than 1/16" thick i believe , so use contact cement if you wish
We did it at work and it is slick

I'll add a +1 for the ideas that MrRon and Rich suggested, only caveat is hopefully the drawers have a
hard stop built into them, it would be a disaster with a full drawer, all slick-a-fied to pull out completely.

To add to Rich's suggestion, rathen buying a full sheet or half sheet at a big box store, get edging instead
all you need are a few strips and it's a lot more convienent than wresting and cutting a full sheet for formica.

Thanks for the further recommendations. The drawers are stop drawers so the Formica strips sound like a good option. I haven’t gotten to it yet, will report in when there.

Today I cleaned up the drawers and cabinet. Sprayed star brite hull cleaner on and power washed the lot (the lower drawers in the cleaning pic show “before” condition. I bypassed the drawer slides for now and installed it under my similar equipto cabinet. Looking forward to using the new 18 drawers. Will probably hit the paint with rubbing compound and wax.
