Collet or Nut ?

Post by jcfx »

I have a ER32 collet chuck ( Glacern ) and just recently it be came difficult to release endmils
out of the collet, normally I'd loosen the nut and spin the nut off by hand to change
collets or tools ( usually with tool falling out once I loosen the nut ) .
Now I get about 2 spins of the nut and it stops, tools do not drop out on their own
I have to use the spanner to 'break' the stopping point to continue.

I'm wondering if it's time to replace the collet nut or the collet ?

That's how all of my ER collet chucks work , all your doing is breaking the collet free of the taper, just means your collets are now seating correctly in the holder. ( Don't know why it wouldn't have done that initially).

Like Nyle said.......this is normal for collets. Doing exactly what it's designed to do.

Thanks for the replies, it's weird, from day one the moment I break free the nut tools would fall out
of the collet ( ruined a few nice carbide end mills :( ) if you guys are right then it took along time
for the collets to seat. I'm gonna order a new nut from Glacern anyway, the nuts inner face that contacts the
collet is looking gnarly, whatever they're coated with is wearing away.

Just a note on use of ER collets, or any collets for that matter:

I ALWAYS clean all collet and holder surfaces before assembly. Every time.
I usually use a carefully cleaned finger, which can feel tiny bits of contaminants.

So all of my various collets continue to remain scar free and properly seating.
A little prevention gives extended lifetimes.
