My Garratt .... for your perusal.

Unka Jesse, Willy, Tel, Dampfwilli, and all others,

Attached is the first of 3 pics of my "O" gauge Freelance Garratt. I based him on one of the Pommy Garratts.
I borrowed a mates digital camera just to speed things up.......

You may notice that the cab and foot plate are missing. They are still in the travel box which is up in the shed, and I didn't have time to reattach them before taking the pics. I have to remove the "missing" items so that I can see what I'm doing when I'm running him. Firring is almost imposible when the foot plate is attached.

He pulls me arround the track OK, so he's not an ornament..... Though sometimes I think he's getting close. <GRIN>

I hope this temporarily aleiviates your curiousities..... <GRIN>

Looks a lot like the "Steam Mice" that LBSC described in ME in the late 50's, shortly before he was banished.

Phill, lookin' good there mate, but I got a couple of questions. You mention trouble with fireing, whatcha burnin' in that little critter? Coal?? Nother thing, is the valve gear Kosher? I have never seen anything like that so I assume it has something like Stephenson Link motion hidden inside the frame plates? Quick, I'm a dyin' of curiosity!

Hold on!!! Don't die on us yet !!!!!!!!!!! <GRIN> I'm getting back to you as fast as I can......

I've been burning coal. I know gas is the best thing for this size...... but I just love the smell of coal smoke....... And..... to support my pathetic weakness....... it's prototypical.

The valve gear is internal slip excentric, driving rocker bars to external cylinders. It's a simple and easy method of getting the job done. Also, at the time, I couldn't work out how to accurately opperate reversing gear at this size. 7.25" gauge is just so easy in comparison!!!! <GRIN>
From memory the engine took 250 hrs to build.

Well....... After building it, I can undoubtably agree that it is TOO small for humans to opperate it with anything resembling ease.... <GRIN> Definately a 3 cockroach job.....
