Rudd is correct. these fittings already have a nice landing for the ball to seal against, the little brass piece is a pushrod that rides, big end down against the cam bar and it will push the ball off the seat. works great on the Allen American for the last 15 years. i have a set of super scale prime cocks on the pacific. I prefer my manual valves over the steam.. the steam cocks have a lag to them where the manuals i can open and close with a flick of the level.Mike Walsh wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 6:19 amActually, it might be the other way around... I will leave it to Chris to respond... I could see the ball being the bearing surface to push the piston up, off of a seat.
WF&P #534 uses a poppet type piston cylinder cock that is pushed up by a similar bar that Chris is using in his design. Push up to allow passage of steam, debris, etc., and remove the upward force to allow it to close. From time to time they gum up with stuff (teflon tape is usually a contributing factor), so we have to disassemble and clean with brake cleaner, ensure there are no burrs - deburr if needed, then reassemble, reinstall, and run. Probably the most painstaking part is making sure each one goes back in the same place and they are tightened properly such that they are aligned so the bar does not bind up.

Re: Cylinder cocks
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.
Re: Cylinder cocks
I've been using that design on my C-25 for over 30 years and have never had a problem with them. Great thing about this design is that it can be used behind the cylinder as well as under.

Here's what I made for my 2.5" scale 2-6-0. Would be happy to post drawings if there's interest.

Anthony,
I would like to have the dwgs. If you have them in R13/14 .dwg that would be icing on the cake.

Re: Cylinder cocks
If I understand the concept, the cam bar pushes the ball (or stem) UP to close the cock, and when the ball or stem drops down, the steam exhausts out the hole in the body? What forms the valve seat?

Re: Cylinder cocks
Actually...up is open...down is closed.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.
Re: Cylinder cocks
I would be interested in seeing the drawings as well. I am ACAD compatible.

Anthony, you may have a market for the 2.5” scale cylinder cocks if you’re interested.

Re: Cylinder cocks
I made a few extra sets when I made mine. Perhaps I should make more.
Here's PDF drawings for the cylinder drains.

Re: Cylinder cocks
Mega cool, I'm going to have to give these a try! I had tried a set from Railroad Supply but there just wasn't enough track clearance (dwg. dated 9-25-70). I ordered a set of the Keim Okadee Cylinder Drains a couple of years back but the gentleman stepped back from the order. Currently I'm just using the automatic drain valves. While they work, I'd prefer to show some steam around the track. Someday...
