Early Baldwin 4-2-0 drawings

Post by H&NERY »

I have have a fascination with early 4-2-0 locomotives, namely the Baldwins built around 1837 to 1840. I would like to build a 15" gauge model of this locomotive, a replica of the Chicago & Galena Union (C&NW) "Pioneer" Problem is I am having a hard time coming up with some good drawings, especially of the valve gear details. Does anyone know of any older books out there that may detail these little locomotives better? I am planing on making a trip to Chicago History Museum to look at the real thing sometime in the near future. Thanks.

To start off I would recommend "A History of the American Locomotive: Its Development, 1830 - 1880" and "Early American locomotives" by John White

In 1927 the B&O railroad built replicas of the "Tom Thumb", "John Bull", and the 4-2-0 "Lafayette ". I believe the drawings created for those replicas are now part of the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Transportation.

Cheers.

Rich,
Thank you for the reminder! I kept thinking I'd seen someone offering a model kit but I couldn't remember who. I checked AJ Reeves but didn't think to check Friends.

This set of drawings would be a great springboard for any project.
