Info request, Friends Hudson tender bottom
Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help. Does anyone have a cast bronze Hudson water bottom tender bottom? I'd love a few pics of both sides and the ends. Also looking for some dimensions, thickness is most important, I know the X and Y.
Alternatively if you have one to sell, I might be interested in that too.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Info request, Friends Hudson tender bottom
A number of years ago, I cast five General Steel Casting's tender water bottoms for 1/8th scale.
They were for a 4-8-4 all welded tender.
It required two furnaces melting A356 Aluminum, and three helpers to do the pouring.
I knew I would never have an opportunity do a project like this again, because they were about to close the school's two foundry classrooms.
The patterns were done in styrofoam, and I had a lot of time invested in the patterns and castings.
I also cast the sides and inside baffels out of foam patterns in aluminum.
I machined one of the beds, but have not done anything else with that project, they are NOT for sale.
Tho, it is a not completed project, I had great pride and fun doing it.

When my hudson arrives off its journey north I shall send you some photos ... I'm 250 miles away at the moment

I would think that this casting would be much easier to produce with aluminum than with bronze. Aluminum (and cast iron) has a greater ability to fill thin sections. Not saying it can’t be done; just much easier with conventional methods.

Ah yes ..but then you do not have the weight
Water bottoms were not available when I built mine so I used 1/4" brass plate.. and I am very glad for it.
It is a long tender and when low on water and going around curves...the few extra (dozen) pounds are appreciated.

Too many things going on to bother listing them.
