Locomotive headlamp

Post by Geochurchi »

Hi, we have a steam locomotive that we are resorting, looking for parts for the headlamp, it’s 7.5 gauge, I will get measurements, what else would be required?

Does the headlight have any markings that indicate who made it? Parts for these are likely not easily obtainable.

Appears to be one of the old Mercer headlight kits assembled with the handle in the upside down position. Usually the handle was installed in the down position on most headlights I have seen.

I've been looking for information on headlights recently and my observation is that Golden Glow, Pyle-National, and Sunbeam all made a model of headlights that was very similar to yours. The biggest differences I could see was location of the hinges and the latches.

It looks like most of yours is there. What parts are you missing?

Hi, thanks for the reply, I was trying to determine what type of bulb was used, I am not at the site and I am relying on someone else for identification, thinking of possibly converting to an LED, also looking for options to supply power for it, I have seen some suggestions for using a small steam generator that would produce 12 Volts, any thoughts on this?
Thanks

They are likely just a flashlight bulb, either screw in or flanged base. At one time it was common for people to use off-the-shelf metal reflectors, but the days of buying a new reflector at a kiosk in you hardware store are long gone and these days any that you will find will probably be plastic. There are charts showing light bulb specs on the Internet. I found some screw-in LEDs on Amazon that replace incandescents and have a dome on them in warm white that I think will work.

As for generators, There is another ongoing thread with considerable information on making one. It can be done, but it's a project in itself if you want to make one. If you buy one, plan on somewhere in the range of $1500 for a Moseley. There was another type recently listed (and sold) in the classifieds.
