Cylinder Covers for Allen Mogul
I'm contemplating how to tackle cylinder covers for my Allen Mogul. .008 or .009 shim stock will fit under the brass covers seen in the photo. Create the shape, retain it with those covers, good to go.
Or is .008 to thin? Even with half hard stock it's probably too thin? How do most Allen Mogul builders do this?
Thanks!
(Ignore the dog fur... yes it's been sitting in the garage that long...)

Re: Cylinder Covers for Allen Mogul
I used a thicker metal sheeting for the side covers, and enlarged the inside diameter of the head covers until it all fit.
I added some small screws top and bottom for security.

Way too thin.. .050 or thicker from castings can be held in thr lathe
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Bill, I think he is not talking about the end covers, but rather the jacketing for the cylinders themselves.Bill Shields wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 4:35 am Way too thin.. .050 or thicker from castings can be held in thr lathe

Should be specified on the drawing.

Re: Cylinder Covers for Allen Mogul
I had an old brass fireplace wood storage/carrier that was somewhere around 0.050" and I thought it would make nice brass cylinder covers until I went to cut it and realized it was actually steel plated with brass and a crappy lacquer finish! I sanded the surface and shot it with the same primer and paint I used for the loco and tender. I had made paper templates from cardstock and transferred it to the metal sheet. I did spend considerable time to get everything bent up with nice radii to fit the contours of the cylinder casting before I painted them. now just the brass head covers hold them in place.

OK, so it sounds like I'm on the right path for the jacket, but need to use minimum 0.050 and modify the brass cylinder covers to suit that. Thanks for the advice.
Re: Cylinder Covers for Allen Mogul
I used 28 ga. (.015) blue stovepipe left over from my boiler wrapper, worked fine.
.050 sounds kinda thick to wrap cylinders.

This is the brass covers I made, approximately .020" thick. Two screws underneath and row of number 2 model no. 2 model bolts along the top edge.

Wow that looks good. OK, modifying my plan for .015 or .020. Much easier to turn down the insides of my existing covers. Thanks guys!

Do you hand drill into the cylinder castings very carefully and shallowly? for the model bolt holes to hold it on
