Cylinder Passageway Designs with Slide Valve

Post by DesignerIn3D »

I'm working with a 1904 Baldwin cylinder drawings that provides the classic three views of the cylinder. I'm attempting to draw this in 3D CAD.
My question is regarding how the live steam passageway is designed/formed from a.) the inside edge of of the port to b.) the branch of the Y.
I see the internal walls between the live steam and exhaust and it would be nice to have one in the shop to examine.
Where might I might images or other 3D perspective drawings of these passageway areas? Do any exist in museums that are cross-section cut for display? Any laying around a junk pile somewhere?

Maybe order a casting from a live steam supplier and cut it apart with a bandsaw?

Except, many cylinder castings do not have the ports cast in.

If you want to see how steam cylinders are ported, look at any mechanical drawings for them. if you are not able to read drawings, I'm not sure what to do to help you.

I made my cylinders from drawings, seemed pretty straightforward.

Is this a design exercise or something you are going to build?
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Do some real research - find a copy of a Locomotive Dictionary or Locomotive Cyclopedia.
They have the illustrations you are looking for.

Designerin3d:
I have 3d drawing of a cylinder composed with OnShape in an *.stl format. It has all the passages and bosses on it. You may be able to open it and edit it or at least open it and view it. I drew it up based on the MEG Wendy design, which is only different from the Allen design in dimension. After drawing it up I printed it out to use as a pattern to have two cast. In my case It was much cheaper, easier and basicaly pain free to purchase and use Allens. Steves are much improved over what Gene used to deliver (I have both). Pm me with your e-mail and I, hopefully, can forward it to you. If you are using OnShape I can give you direct access. I will try to post it here if I can figure out how.

I converted these to JPEG to make it easy to copy and paste. that should give you a rough idea.

I suspect the original poster is another tire kicker. Has not even been back to the forum since he first posted.

Thought it sounded kinda like a rudimentary question.
