Aflas o-rings

Post by milwiron »

There was a short article in Live Steam & Outdoor Railroading a number of months ago and a few posts in the archives here on Aflas o-rings for steam and oil use. The water and steam resistance of Aflas is rated much improved over Viton.
Does anyone here have long term experience running Aflas in their pumps and fittings? I would be interested in hearing your experiences and opinions.

Don't you mean Viton o-rings? BIG difference.

Viton o-rings have been used in high-end Accucraft and Aster steam locomotives (Ga. 1-45mm) for years without issues. There must be a reason.

No, Aflas is the correct name. It's an elastomeric copolymer of tfe and polypropylene. Supposed to be much more resistant to oils and steam than Viton. It only seems to be readily available in 80 durometer.

giggle...viton not Vinton -> bobby would not survive long in steam..

at 100 psi or less, the difference between Viton and AFLAS is a moot point. I am experimenting with AFLAS but have 100's of pill bottles of viton rings that have served me well for 40 years and cannot remember of a viton failure that was not the result of my own stupidity

Too many things going on to bother listing them.
