Hello all,
Does anyone happen to know the chronology and type of locomotives produced by the former Ulin Locomotive Works the foregoing meaning personally constructed by the late Richard Ulin?
Have recently been working on rebuilding Ulin Locomotive Works C&S Engine No. 70.

Damn, I spent a lot of time talking to Rich and it never occurred to me to collect his personal history. I wish I had done that.

When i joined the Colorado live steamers in 1984 Rich Ulin was just finishing his Mason bogie loco. He had built some type of 2-6-6-2 locomotive and had it running but it was not detailed when he sold it. Then he build the K-27 for a guy, when asked why he didn't build one for himself, he said he didn't want one. After that he built the west side lumber shays as far as i remember he built 14 and 15. Then he built a Critter Kind of like a Grasshopper, Then he built the C&S #70 and the last was the Climax. He built several cars in there and a diesel switcher as well. My count is 9. I know he sold several casting kits of the Mason bogie as well as the K-27 and a couple critters not sure on the others. Bruno Platzer bought the rights to everything if you need a part he should be able to help you.

I bought the "diesel" from Rich a bit before he passed. It is a 3 3/4" scale Plymouth gas hydraulic that he built sometime around 2012. (That was Rich's answer when I asked him.)skyloop440 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 1:06 pm He built several cars in there and a diesel switcher as well.

Hi George, I had seen were you bought that, sounds like your round house is felling right up. A guy here in the springs bought the Climax and some cars, i'm sure you know him. My first loco was a 2 1/2" scale gas hyd GE switch ran great i sometimes wish i still had it.

Hello Matt,
Thanks for the production information for the "Ulin Locomotive Works." I have recently been involved with the refurbishing of ULW C&S Eng. No. 70 for its current owner and have produced a video explaining one element of the original construction of the locomotive that needed to be corrected. My current thought is that during his life time Richard never experienced what the the full operating potential of his C&S Eng. No. 70 could be. Although from an appearance stand point Richard did indeed produce an outstanding miniature steam locomotive.
Below is the URL to the C&S Eng. No. 70 repair video:
