John,
I think 2 - 1/2” gauge is a terrific size. Easily moved about, can be displayed in your living room and yet will pull a decent load with ease!

I just wish the clubs here in the Northeast United States had 2 - 1/2” gauge rails.

Yes, 2½" has to be my favourate gauge, especially as you get older and not so fit! :D A lot of fun as well as being a bit of a challenge to drive sometimes.

Another advantage is they are relatively cheap to build and don't require big machinery to build them.

We are fortunate in the UK that there are about 30 clubs that still have 2½" rails and a couple of clubs have added them recently which is good news.

Yep, not much 2 1/2" gauge activity in North America at all. I have a few pieces in 1/2" scale 2 1/2" gauge, as you are probably aware, but I'm probably the only person within 250 miles of me, or maybe more, that is doing anything in that scale/gauge. Maybe someday I can build an elevated layout. I have plenty of room. Love seeing a 2 1/2" gauge locomotive pulling around people.

Here's a video of a trip around the Northeast Ohio Livesteamer's 1000 ft Highline. This was taken with a very interesting 360 degree plus camera and is interactive using your cursor. You can see forward and back, side to side and up and down. Locomotion is provided by club member George Santin and his 1" Atlantic.
