Identify engine

Post by Fred_V »

A guy at our track bought this 2-4-4 dummy electric steam engine. It came from Canada and I'm re-gauging it for him. I'd like to know what it is if anyone can identify it. It had nice detail castings but tin can cylinders and fake valve gear.

I'd say those are Friends Models drivers... The engine must be home brew. Hard telling without more photos.

I thought Friends were 3/4" scale. This is 1.5" scale. I just have the chassis here. I'll see if I can get more photos of it.

The Yankee Shop originally sold plans and castings for both a 3/4" and 1" version of the Boston and Maine J-1 Atlantic.

The B&M J-1 originally had 79" drivers, so for 1" scale they would need to be approximately 6 & 5/8" diameter.

I would say its safe to assume that these wheel castings are originally for the Yankee Shop 1" Atlantic.

EDIT: I would like to add that drawings and critical castings (including drivers and cylinders) for the 1" Atlantic are still available today via Friends Models:
