Also played with the idea of using 1.5” aluminum rail to make queen post for the trashgon.

Been awhile! At the current rate I’ll have the project done in 10yrs!!!
Currently working on the GE 50ton (X-1) pilots and foot boards. Pilots are cut from 3/8” plate, foot boards are made from 1/4” angle. Still need to get the cut lever brackets, grab irons, and coupler pockets worked out. Currently waiting on couplers to arrive. Until then I’m hung up on getting the correct length the coupler tube, and pocket facia should extend from the pilot.
Three weeks ago I ordered some 2.5” scale Sharon couplers, so far they haven’t shipped.
I mocked up the small cow catcher that goes between the foot boards. Not 100% happy with the looks of it, may have to go back to the drawing board, and figure out how to get more consistent bends on the sloped bars. The cow catcher assembly will be notched to slide up around the couple pocket facia and bolt to the pilot.
First photo for reference is a Rich Yoder Oscale model of the X-1.

Here’s the link for the shapeways shop I’m working with. He has them available in 2.5” scale in the store. He had to customize mine for 3”.

Did he really quote $3.75 each for the handles? He just charged me $65 for two of the same design - 3” long, in nylon.
Are your 3” in length?

No, your handle is huge compared to my 3” scale handles. Mine are roughly 1/4” in width, and 1-3/8” long.
He did say that shapeways sets the price and he has very little markup on price. He does an excellent job with the scaling, and design that goes into the finish product.

Glenn,
Here is a picture of your 3” long version compared to some 2.5” handles. My 3” scale handles are slightly bigger that 2.5” version.
Duffy posted a video on the 2.5” FB page of the bigger version with a catch that operates like the real deal. Pretty slick! Makes me wish I had printed a few in steel, so I could have a couple of operational hood doors that open as well.

Thanks. Quite a difference in size! Sounds like Shapeways pricing is geared exclusively to HO scale modelers. Not sure I will go forward with any more printing...

Yeah there is a lot of small scale stuff, however there is quite a lot of 1.5” and 2.5” products as well. If you’re looking for scale RR details it’s hard to beat 3D printing.Glenn Brooks wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 11:04 am Thanks. Quite a difference in size! 3D printing goes by volume I believe, so going up a couple scale sizes could result in ~10x the volume of 3D printed material being used = big $$$.
Due to my odd 2" scale I've just been making do with what I can get my hands on, or soldering up little pieces of brass stock to make things like the rungs and handles.
Curtiss, is that your locomotive body in that handle picture? If so, the details are looking great.

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR
No, not my loco.
That is a 2.5” scale is a GE center cab belonging to Michael Duffy. He is the one that has the printed handles available.
Today I made up one of the cut levers, and mounting brackets. Used 1/4” steel rod.
LOL! Bout had myself tangled up in the bench vice with all the bends it had.
Mocked up a pilot grab iron to see how it look.
Think for durability, I’ll drill holes in the pilot to allow the leg of the grab irons to pass through. I’ll thread the portion of the leg that sticks through the pilot, so it can bolt in place.
Then on the front side of the pilot I’ll silver solder 90* returns with fake bolt heads to give it the “bolted on” look, the returns will hold the iron in place when nut is tightened brim the backside of the pilot.
I originally bent up a 1/4” steel rod, heated up the return,,and tried to flatten it, but wasn’t happy with the look.
If you have a better idea, please share?
Also after much run-around with a certain Accucraft wannabe sells-man, I went straight to the website, and ordered 5 pairs of 2.5” scale Sharron couplers. Hopefully they will arrive shortly so I can get started on the coupler pockets.

I think the cut bars and grab irons look good.
I ran into the same issue with the grab iron that you did, the larger stock just doesn't bend in a tight enough radius and didn't look good. I didn't even get to the flattening part. I ended up using little pieces of flat stock and extended the round through it just like you did. Then I used #4 stainless TEK screws to attach them.

Ha! I went back through your build page looking at photos of your loco, sure enough,
I’ve unknowingly came to the same conclusion on grabs irons. Yours look good, think I’ll go with this concept.

The mig welder I had on loan had to be returned. Unfortunately, that means the 50tonner is on hold. Plus I’m waiting on some custom cut parts to arrive. While waiting for some funds to purchase a mig, think I’ll get back on the 3” scale DRGW Trash-gon project which has been sitting neglected for quite awhile now.
Yesterday, I got the shiplap deck planking made up, including the hat/T-board for the middle joint.
