Affordable Solidworks license

Post by WJH »

Just discovered that if you join the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), you get a student version of Solidworks without having to be a student or veteran.
Needless to say, I am now an EAA member...

please be aware of something that I 'sort of'' remember

Student Versions of Solidworks are not always 'upgradable' to the 'latest version'.

I also seem to remember that models created by 'student versions' could not be imported by 'newer versions' of the software either.

This may have changed...but if I am correct, once you start using the Student Version, you are stuck with THAT VERSION of the software and if, for some reason you no longer have THAT VERSION, you may not be able to open your models.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Bill, you are right. If the model is created in Solidworks student version, it can be opened in a Solidworks "Commercial" Version as long as the two versions are the same; IE. Student 2018, Standard 2018. The model is permanently marked internally with the students name and that it was created
in a student version. This marking can be removed by the "Reseller" but good luck, they usually won't do it. Yes, the marking will show up in Standard or Premium. This to prevent companies from using the student version instead of paying for the real thing.

Me? I use the Standard 2018 version in my company, but it works real nice designing control panels and machinery.

From the original development team of Solidworks comes OnShape. Worth a look, as it is essentially the same but free for education use. The commercial use "professional" version is also much less expensive than SW. Plus, it will open Solidworks files.

Dave Jones did a spiel on AUS SW pricing.

I'm trying freeCAD.
