Been awhile since I've posted. Made some progress today. Got the spring equalizers and center spreader installed. I have also started work on the springs and saddles. Drive wheels are also finished. Andy Pullen is doing the cradle, lead and trailing trucks and soon main rods, side rods and cylinders.

Here is one of the cylinders boring in the lathe. I am running 2 sets of cylinders. One for Jim and one for Brian Tusin's Erie K-5.

Re: New Project-Little Engines New Northern
I have gotten a little more done since my last post
Re: New Project-Little Engines New Northern
Got some more done. Cradle is on, currently machining rear brake hangers. Cylinders are done and will be set on next. Rear and lead trucks are in the works along with the boiler.

What holds the cradle on to the rest of the frame? It seems like a lot of weight would bear down on it and the picture only shows a couple of bolts holding it on. Am I missing something?

What is hard to make out in the pic is that the cradle slides into milled pockets on the inside of the frame. There are 10 10-32 sockethead cap screws on each side holding it together. In this pic I am working on the rear brake hangers.Benjamin Maggi wrote:What holds the cradle on to the rest of the frame? illigitimi non carborundum
Re: New Project-Little Engines New Northern
Rust-Oleum self etching primer and Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel. Hopefully it holds up well, I couldn't find anything more durable locally.timmy wheeler wrote:Jim, What are you using for paint? Timmy
Re: New Project-Little Engines New Northern
Hard to believe it has been 3 years, but with a move, house projects and building a shop the Northern had to wait. I was just getting back to it and my shoulder went so another delay while I have replacement surgery Monday. A few things did get done. It got a new stand to sit on, front lead truck which is now painted and a few other parts finished.
