Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4

Post by Pipescs »

Hard to pick a name for this thread.

Could have been anything from "Saving a Rusty Wreck" to "How Not to Get into Live Steam".

Bottom line this thread is the result of my inability to work on just one project at a time and my love for restoring old machines.

I regret I did not take pictures of this project when I found it in the rain at the Largo, Florida Meet.

It had been donated to the club in an incomplete state and stored in a damp storage building for no telling how long. After looking at it sitting there for two days I finally asked what the club would take for it and we came to a quick agreement. Took ten trips to the van with help from other members to load it into the wife's mini-van. This along with the six foot piece of ten inch pipe and truck castings is going to cost me a new van I am sure in the near future.

This is what it looked like when I pulled it out of Lisa's van. I had to disassemble it to lift it out by the way.

She of course understood right away when I told her I had got it on sale. Go Figure.

Before everyone thinks I'm crazy, I will say that before I made the decision to buy it I gave it two test. One it would roll on the track with simple hand pressure, and the cylinders, which were not attached to the frame, were easy to move by hand showing compression in and out of the ports.

When I unloaded it back in Alabama the first thing I did was tear the cyliniders down to see if they were rusted also. Luckily they were stored with a lot of oil in them and the driver boxes were full of grease.

The inside of the cylinders was clean and oily.

Both Pistons and Ring sets looked clean.

At this point, having bought a frame I started surfing the net to find out what I had.

I just realized that the original discription of what I found dropped off line and did not post

The kit was sold by Winson from England. They went bankrupt before the kit was completed. This left a lot of kit builders in a spot.

I have nine of the original 18 kits.

Two modelers in England have started helping me with research and changes that were required to make the model a good running engine.

What it can look like

Trouble is I do not really want to build it as a Tank Engine. More later on that.

My initial plan is to strip, clean, de-rust and paint all the parts for each sub kit and go completely thru an inventory to see what all I am missing.

The first project is to do all the frame parts covered in the first kit.

A drawing of the LYN
LYN Provile.jpg
Yesterday I took a pile of parts I had cleaned and painted to start the bolt together of a motivational pile.

I parked this in the Man Cave floor to motivate me on the continuing effort to strip and paint parts.

Still not wanting to build a tank engine I found an engine also built by Baldwin that was a 2-4-4. Although not all my mentors like this engine I really have taken a liking to it.

They were used in Maine on two foot gauge I believe. They also were an outside frame engine. Other than the need to extend the aft frame for the trailing truck and coming up with a truck it would not be too far a stretch to modify the Rust Bucket (Named by the Family) into a Forney style engine.

I have also found a few Bachman models to base it on.

Hey Charlie,
What a find!
Maybe buy one of those Bachmann's to use for modeling?

You didn't say what scale, but if it is 7-1/2 gauge with inside drivers it has to be 2-1/2" scale plus.

It will make a GREAT narrow gauge engine that won't be prohibitively heavy.

Here are a few 2-1/2" scale suppliers:

Can't wait to see more.

Welcome to rubber gauge!

Drivers are 9 inches in Diameter. Leading and trailing wheels 5 inches.

Frame spread is 10.5 between drivers but aft frame is 11.325

Charlie - congratulations on seeing the gold under the rust. The Forney should make a nice prototype to follow.

Thanks all

The rust removal process will continue for some time.

Iam in the process of building a rust removal tank to use a battery charger but have been using a chemical called CRL and Must for Rust. This along with a small sand blasting cabinet and a wire wheel.

The Must for Rust works the best of the chemicals I have purchased

Charlie,
Here's a forney trailing truck drawing for you to reference. I believe this is for a 36" gauge loco, from 1906 Locomotive Dictionary.

Will tumbling remove rust. There are other threads on chaski (http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/vie ... =8&t=95713) that discuss using them to clean up parts for painting. It might save some elbow grease if they work.
