I checked with Dave Bortz. He does, in fact still offer these and the SS injectors.

As I am still looking to add weight forward of the drivers, I spent the morning machining out the base ring of the smoke box front. It is half inch plate that is rabbited into the smoke box body. Now I need to lay out the bolts to mount it.

Sure is looking good.
For bow weight, a couple of solid Pb tool boxes on the front deck could be an easy solution.

You're going to want as big of opening as possible for the smokebox door to facilitate front end plumbing, cleaning the flues, inspection etc.
Can always do as Russ suggested, also can add some lead in the sand dome, or between the frame if you want extra weight.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
The plan is for the entire front of the smoke box to come off as one complete assembly. most of the outside ring of bolts will be for show with only four holding the front on.
If there is one thing I have learned with the LE American is that you can not have too much access in this area.
Tomorrow the plan is to find a six inch diameter x three quarter cut off or cut out at Richland LLC in Pulaski Tenn. Failing that I will see what they have at Access Metals in Maryland.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
Went Train Chasing for the first time with Fender. We ran with the Union Pacific Big Boy from Baton Rouge La. going north. Interesting mix of hobbies. Something between NASCAR and Sprint Cars along with Photography. Nothing like running 80 miles an hour on the back roads of LA with a bunch of other crazy people to get to the next cross roads for pictures. Great company and the food in Louisiana is to die for.
While traveling we stopped and visited with David Price. I picked out some fine detail on his engine that will be used here in the shop.
Just before we left on the run I was able to finish the outer ring of studs and nuts. All but four are fake with only the top, bottom and two side ones being actually used to hold the front in place. This to ease the removal for daily clean out.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
A little more time in the shop today.
Started installing parts permanently enough to hopefully team it sometime around Christmas and run around the track in the spring. Of course there will be no cab, probably a wooden water tank, no brakes, ETC.
Tomorrows project is to start inside the smoke box connections for steam, blower and exhaust nozzle.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
Before I start cutting wood for patterns, does anyone know of a source for this style steamdome/sand dome?
It would be for a boiler and jacket 11 inches in diameter. I believe I will be casting them in the six in diameter region after getting measurements from this O scale model.

Not exactly the same style, but look at the Hartford Shops domes for their 2.5” scale 4-6-0 and 2-8-0:

Also check with Alco West:
http://www.alcowestlocomotives.com/
Their website says that they offer castings for a Mason Bogie, which has the fluted domes.

Re: Converting a Baldwin 2-4-2 LYN to a Baldwin 2-4-4
That would be the castings for the Richard Ulin Mason Bogie. Beautiful locomotive. Those dome castings would dress it up nice. The Allen Models Fulton County 4-4-0 has nice dome castings as well. It was made for a 9" boiler, but they could easily be machined to fit on your 10" boiler.

What NG engine are you working on Pointiacguy?
The domes from the mason bogie would look very nice. I imagine those castings are $$$
