I’ve seen several doors that were only held on with four bolts, no problem.

Several guys in my local club only use 4 to 6 bolts to hold them on as they clean the tubes after every run. I will be running propane so no need to clean them a lot however still will be convenient with only 8 holding the door on.

Today I was working on the smokestack and finishing up one of the lower sand dome housings. The smokestack had a step machined in it for the petticoat and so a piece of scrap aluminum round was a perfect fit to hold it to the angle plate for fly cutting. Will finish it up tomorrow. One sand dome lower done and one to go along with the lower steam dome housing.

Nice progress.
Those lower radius machining tasks seem daunting until you are set up and in production.

Yep, up until you discover your radius is off center by .030". Good thing they are not a dynamic part!

Got the smokestack machined today. Fits the smokebox like a glove.

Material arrived this week to allow me to pursue some other parts of the build. Delrin for the main rod bushings, the 3 center sleeves for the Steam and Sand domes, screw nails for the cosmetic rivets on the smoke box, smokebox door dogs, "O" rings for the steam dome lid. Going to my buddies CNC shop next Saturday to make 2 new main rods.

I did not like the ideal of a gasket on the Steam dome lid so I opted for a Viton "O" ring. Had to grind up a tool bit for the grove. I tested it on a scrap piece of round stock before committing it to the lid. I find the easiest way to setup a flat round in the chuck is with parallels. A few taps with a brass hammer gets it within a few thousands. Remove the parallels and finish up with a dial indicator. Then I machined the grove for the "O" ring. When done I had a .035" compression fit between the "O" ring and deck.

Also worked on one of the Sand Dome center sleeves. I ordered them precut however a little longer to machine them parallel. I chucked it up in the lathe and used an indicator to get it within a few thousands. I face cut the end and then machined a recess for the lower dome to press fit into it.
Tomorow I will flip it, size it and machine a flange on top for the dome to press fit.
