Re: Elesco feed water heater
Mike- I will be putting the elesco feed water heater on a NYC Mikado H10b, and later I will make a post for building the H10b locomotive with tender.
Berkman- The feed water heater is design to come apart and I am using copper and brass. At end of season take apart and put it in a bucket of water and CLR and rinse off, dry thoroughly and put it together for next season.

Re: Elesco feed water heater
Finished the water passages in the fixed end of the water heater. I need to put in the inlet and outlet fittings after deburring all the sharp edges.
Re: Elesco feed water heater
Very interesting! Can't wait to see more pics and the mikado build log.
Re: Elesco feed water heater
I've never seen the guts of one or internal drawings. So I'm waiting and watching this to figure out how this all ends up going together and working.

Re: Elesco feed water heater
As I understand they were quite the birds nest of heat exchanger tubing with the exhaust steam surround them. Almost similar in concept to a watertube boiler.

Hey Ken here is a screenshot of the “guts” and how the water travels through the heater.
Re: Elesco feed water heater
Now I'm getting the idea of what the machining has shown. Wow, that's a lot of tubes.
So how do you clean it? If it was supply steam, that would be pretty clean. But exhaust steam has the cylinder oil in it. How is that routed from the exhaust flow?

Re: Elesco feed water heater
The exhaust steam and cold/hot water don't mix in an elesco like this.
There is another cylinder/tank surrounding this internal bundle, and that's where the exhaust steam is routed. This final "tank" is the tank you see when you look at a locomotive with an elesco.

Berkman,
Too bad that's a jpg as it doesn't scale up to get the details clear. But I think I see that the other assembly sits inside the larger cylinder which is getting the steam around the whole thing.
If enough progress photos are posted it should be easy to see how this comes together.

Ya, it was the best I could find online, agree, really look forward to seeing more progress photos.
Honestly, on a model, you probably get as much if not more feedwater heating by adding 5-6 coil loops inside the smokebox as several have done, but its amazing seeing this built!

Drilled the inlet/outlet holes in the fixed end of the feed water heater.
