Another CliShay Build

Re: Another CliShay Build
I decided on a different design for the journal covers on my Clishay. The plans called for a hinged cover that I was not all that wild about. I also really didn't like the prospect of having to tap two small holes in each journal.
The final design might be a bit more modern but on a freelance engine I think it works. It also creates an oil well for the bearings. It will be easy to change if I ever decide to go back to a hinged cover.

Re: Another CliShay Build
I finally cut the keyways in the main gear and shaft for my Clishay. There is a lot of torque transmitted through this joint so I didn’t want to rely on Loctite alone. The engine crank shaft will get the same treatment.
The most time consuming part was grinding the tool for broaching the keyway in the gear. Overall everything went much better than I expected.

Re: Another CliShay Build
Modeltec 1994, pg 14 thru 17. Is a set by Ed Warren designed for the CliShay. If you can't find an issue, PM me and I can try to help.
I also have a set of plans for the Big Bertha engine designed to replace the original, it offers more power and eliminates the need to build or use the original transmition. I may can supply the casting for it or offer you 3D printed patterns, or the drawings so that one can print their own.
If you need or want either, please PM me and we can take care of it "offline"... we do not want to continue here because we don't want to hijack this thread.
BTW, this information was provided to me by another member of this board.

Re: Another CliShay Build
Had Marty Knox build mine. Works great. We have boiler inspection here in Maryland so consider where you want to run.

Re: Another CliShay Build
When I was taking pictures of the VFT boilers I felt they reminded me of something.
I finally figured out what that was - R2D2!

THIS IS LOOKING GREAT! Have you decided on the type of boiler yet?
I am considering the fire tube type, described by" Modeltec 1994, pg 14 thru 17"

Re: Another CliShay Build
So I'm still going to build a fire tube boiler. My plan is to do all of the fab work and then hire out the welding. I'm hoping that it will not be difficult to find someone willing to weld it. My concern is that no one will want to touch it decause it is a boiler.
Work has slowed on my Clishay. There is too much going on the get any real schedule nailed down but I'm making progress. I'm hoping to get the engine running by spring and the boiler built over the summer. Best case scenario the first steaming will be this fall.

Please keep sharing. The more info the better.
