I put the machine back together and I am glad to report that the knee elevates smoothly . There is still a slight moment once every other rotation of the handwheel ( gears are 2:1 ratio) where I get interference.
The difference is such that before this job, raising the table a known distance was out of the question. Now it's smooth enough that I could drill with it- really miles away.
I'm confident that the major part of the repair was making the .141 shim now all that weight is off of the gears and on the elevating screw's thrust bearing. The binding in the gears has got to be is a symptom of that.
