Ring light

Post by Bill Shields »

Anybody out there using a SELFIE RING LIGHT on their mill?

Bought a cheapie 8" diameter to play with..seems to give good light..just need to play with a few mounting ideas.

Know it is going to get hammered by chips..but for the $ as an experiment...

Bill, don’t have a ring light, but did buy a couple of small oblong LED “spot” lights that I found on Amazon. I use two of these on my Bridgeport clone, one on each side of the quill, and another on my Burke #4 horizontal mill. I tried these out as an experiment, as I thought I would need to use the round lower part of the quill to mount a rotating dial indicator to indicate parts on the robtab.

They Work very well. Quite glad I tried these out.

I made one of the LED ring lights for my mill and I am not very pleased with it. It is very bright, but the problem is that as the quill is lowered, it blocks the light. I will likely go to something like Glenn has put on his machines. Photo attached.

The ring lights look cool on a mill but in practice they don't work well when you get closer
to the work as Ted pointed out, I had ordered a few sets of halo lights for cars to try, and
I decided to go another route because of the dim spot the ring light generated as the quill got
closer to the work.

I wound up like Glenn getting 2 flexible goose necked lights but from a sewing machine
supplier ( about $20ea ) and wired them together, they're pointed about 45º on each side
towards the work and have a mag base that I customized to attach to a sheet metal access
cover behind the quill on my PM 935 mill.
They work well, fully adjustable positioning and not too bright, each of the lights retain their individual on/off switches
so I can use both ( always ) or either one.

For me it would have meant making a whole new clamp collar for the spindle, and making some sort of reflector
to 'aim' the LED's on the ring light so that they would all shine on one spot. Too much trouble for what it had
to do. This is my setup with the sewing machine lights, I'm very happy with it.
