It has been around in rural electrification for decades, though not without problems.

Earth ground return can have serious impacts on buried metal pipelines. Probably also on railroad tracks, or anything else that can act as a competing conductor.

Couple of shots of my NOS 1925 SB 9 x48” lathe, and a lathe bench I recently built for it. Lathe was in storage for around 85 years until I found it on Craigs list..

The original overhead drive belt countershaft assembly was missing when I bought it, so fitted a latter, 1950’s model countershaft assembly and DC variable drive motor to power it.

Factory scrapings still present on the bed, under the chuck.

A little better view of the 1925 lathe design. The finish is all original, Gilsonite- a form of naturally occurring alsphaltum, whenheated and mixed with oil, crystalizes on the surface, forming an impervious, rust resistant barrier.

According to https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/ the $301.00 in 1925 dollars would be equivalent to $4,500.00 in 2021.

4500 Washingtons for a quality lathe is a good deal, eh?
