Collet Chuck
I recently purchased an asiatic lathe. It was made in 1976 so it isnt a lathe of recent. Not that it matters or is relevent, the lathe is a Gallin Model P-5 10x24.
My problem is it came with a collet chuck. The main body threads onto the spindle, The headache I cant figure out. The handle goes to a loop. The loop interacts with a collar on the chuck. On the far side of the loop is a pivot point with some threaded rod. I cant find on the lathe anywhere the rod is supposed to attach. Even below the chuck there is nothing for a hole.

I say that collet attachment was never installed on that lathe.
Go for it!

It wouldn't attach on the chuck side of the headstock. Look on the opposite end of the spindle. (post an image of that side)
There should also be a draw tube that would fit through the spindle, and some sort of adapter to attach the round part of the collet closer to the spindle. Then there should be an adapter to replace the chuck for the collets to fit into.
Something like this.

Re: Collet Chuck
According to this video, not all collet chcuck require a draw tube.

Yes, some collet chucks are mounted in place of the chuck with no draw tube. I have an Allison one built that way.
What you need to find is some literature or picture to see what your complete unit looks like - and figure out if an adapter of some sort is needed to mount it to the spindle.

Re: Collet Chuck
If that chuck threads onto your spindle do a little measuring and drill and tap the headstock for the threaded rod. That is a belt drive head so no worries about drilling and hitting oil etc.

Re: Collet Chuck
If that is a front mounted collet closer, the collet should fit into it. It doesn't appear that it would from looking at the image.
Does it?
Does it?

Re: Collet Chuck
The bracket that collet chuck in the video uses is bolted to the face of the headstock.
I have seen ones where the bracket clamps to the bed.

Yeah I figure that is probably what I need to do as well. Just wanted to confirm it here.
Can anyone tell from the pictures if it is a 5C collet or the weird logan collets? Or do I need to google the dimensions?
I have intentions of using it to make some safeties for a Live Steam powered garden tractor.

Here's a 5C Keep in mind that a 1J is almost the same, just a different length.Lovesthedrive wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 9:23 am Can anyone tell from the pictures if it is a 5C collet or the weird logan collets? Or do I need to google the dimensions?
