MT3 Dead Center
Re: MT3 Dead Center
When I bought my grinder it came with carbide tipped dead centers that had tip damage. I sent them to Diamond Industrial Tool and they re-ground them to repair the tils and concentricity to the shank.
I don't recall what the cost was, but it wasn't insignificant, but they were very nice centers that would have been far more expensive to replace.

For a top brand name carbide center, regrinding may make sense compared to replacement cost.
For a plain one, labor to regrind is pretty much the same, but the replacement cost is lower.
Shars has them for $7.50 - might as well get a couple. Carbide tipped is only $12.

Aw... now...just how bad COULD it be?
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

Not all carbide tipped dead centers are created equal!
This is the MT3 I had re-ground, and the matching MT2 as well.

Re: MT3 Dead Center
Nice center Glenn and that's a lot larger chunk of carbide than most of the off shore one's seem to have. How bad COULD it be Bill? I dunno, I'm not saying there claims are bogus, but if I've learned anything about off shore tooling it's to test and verify everything you can. .0004" they guarantee? If that's true I'd want to mark the high or low side and make sure it's always in the tail stock either straight up or down so it has the least effect. Any half decent live center usually guarantee's to be with a couple of 10ths. A dead center ought to be fairly easy to match or do even better than that. Almost a 1/2 thou out is quite a bit.
