What is this tailstock used for

What is this tailstock used for

This tailstock came with a Boley Leinen 8mm lathe and I have no idea what it is used for. I'm hoping someone can tell me.

To me, it looks like the standard tail stock, that someone may have put or made
something for a special unknown purpose, the brass thumb wheel doesn't look OEM,
or it could be a case of " it fits so it must be so " from someone who was playing around with the parts.
