I was able to freehand grind the threading bit I used. Use the threaded rod as a thread guage and grind slowly until the bit will not quite fully bottom in the groove. Slightly oversize will not hurt as the thread and nut are loaded in one direction only. You could also make the bit a shade narrow and use the compound to shift the bit sideways to cut a wider slot.
