I need a milling cutter ...

Post by jcfx »

I want to cut a shallow v-groove in some of the tool holders I'm making, so that I can clamp round tools
if need be, there's not a lot of room since the tool holders will max out at 1/2 " .

I'm thinking something like a key seat cutter, but but instead of a flat it would cut a v .
I've seached high and low for a cutter with no results, would there be a specific name for such a cutter
or should I just take a key seat cutter and grind one ?

The v groove feature is in the right toolholder.

You should just about be able to cut that with a 1/4" end mill.

Use a woodruff cutter at the demonstrated angle.

Even if you need to knock off the top corner a bit.. who cares?

Nice and rigid.

Hope the holder is not hardened...
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I made a bunch of what I call "cutter cradles" to help center tool bits and keep them from sliding around as you tighten the set screws. One of them has a V notch in it for use with round tools just like you're talking about. No special cutter needed to make it. It might also work to put the cradle on top of the tool if that made sense for some reason, although I've never actually tried that.

Glenn has it ,use a carbide end mill. Did the same job on several of my Multifix holders.

If you can't get to it properly with an endmill as Glenn suggested, there is a cutter that will work.

Goggle "double angle cutter", you can get them with different included angles, but 45 degrees is what you likely want. Various diameters also available.

They are not particularly cheap, but they are out there.

Or you might be able to make a fly cutter do the job.

This is the smallest 90 degree V cutter that I have, it's 1.175" OD with a 0.50" hole. If it will work you can borrow it, send me a PM.

This is the style I was thinking of.

This pic is from the MSC catalog.

The sweet spot for these is 3/4" diameter, for some reason both larger and smaller sizes cost more.

I have a similar cutter, it may be a 120 degree V, it may not be the sharpest but you're welcome to give it a try.

Yep a double angle cutter. They can be bought in various shank sizes and tool diameters as well as without shanks to fit an arbor. Glenn's idea would be the fastest and cheapest though. Depending on what your using for collets it might take what are known as an extended length end mill though.
