Whatzit?

Post by neanderman »

Can anyone Identify this? It is hollow, has a hole through the stem, and has a rubber o-ring at the base of the stem. It was found near a railroad, so I suspect it's either used to drill rail or concrete.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like a very rusty Rota-broach hole-saw.

We used them to drill rail for fish-plates.
Today's solutions are tomorrow's problems.

Yes, a rotabroach or cousin. Look on ebay for shiny ones. Work wonders for drilling large holes without turning everything into chips. You need a mag drill or mill to run one - not hand held!

Besides a mag-drill, I have a hand held drill press, called a 'Drill-Mate', that does a great job with them. 1/2" chuck air drills fit right in it.
Look it up. They are handy for other things too.

Thanks warmstrong1955 and Russ. I had searched MSC, but without a search term, I didn't have much luck!

It also tells me what the little steel "button" I found is.

I get bored waiting for the next train and am always kicking around the ballast. 8)

You might try looking up "annular cutter". I have used these in a mag-drill to "drill" holes in steel plate mostly.

Good Luck,

Thanks, Terry. Once I did a web search on rotabroch, I found the "annular cutter" terminology.
